JEANRSS will monitor and display the contents of RSS feeds. Each feed or channel is represented by a JEAN group, which may be placed in one or more categories as is usual for JEAN. Each separate item in the feed is represented by a JEAN item and is displayed along with a button which will bring up the full page in your web browser.

RSS channels are continually monitored by JEAN, the time between checks is variable, some channels indicate the lifetime of articles, others do not. If a channel does indicate a lifetime for its articles then checks will be made at those intervals, otherwise the checks will be run approximately every hour while JEAN is running. The time between checks can be set manually by selecting "Edit the Period Between Updates" from the RSS menu.

An article may be in one of several states:

These states are indicated on the catalog by showing the title of the article in different colours; the colours can be set using "set Status Colours" from the RSS menu. If a channel contains new or updated articles then the channel name will also be displayed in the appropriate colour. If any channel contains new or updated items then the "RSS" label on the tab in the catalog will be displayed in the appropriate colour.

The disposition of obsolete articles can be set by defining a policy. If "Create a new Policy for Obsolete Items" is selected from the RSS menu then a wizard appears. The principle is that after a certain period the obsolete article will be moved into a separate category, and then after a further period will be deleted. There are two different ways of specifying the period, as a number of updates or as a length of time. Different periods have to be given for obsolete articles depending on whether they have been read or not. The categories to which articles are moved mirror the categories in which the original channel is placed, under a special category called obsolete. This will not normally be visible on the catalog, but may be shown and hidden using the menu items "Show Obsolete Category" and "Hide Obsolete Category".
