JEANimages is used to organize digital images. These would normally be from a digital camera but could be from any source. The formats currently supported (JEAN version 1.0) are JPEG, GIF, BMP and PNG. The images are placed into categories as usual, and into Albums (JEAN Groups) for convenient viewing.

JEANimages is not an image editor. It does allow a certain amount of cropping, rotation and other operations for convenient viewing, but it does not make any changes to the original file. JEANimages will create its own thumbnail copies of images; this can take some time particularly if you are viewing a large group of images for the first time, but thereafter the thumbnails are retained and viewing is much quicker.

Both Albums and Images (JEAN Items) have a show button, for an image the button will display a thumbnail of the image, or can be double-clicked on the catalog. In the case of an album this will produce a page of thumbnails for viewing. Right-clicking on an image produces a popup menu that can be used to rotate the thumbnail if desired. A single left-click on the thumbnail image or pressing the show button or double-clicking an image item displays that single image on the screen. The size of window that is used will be the largest that can be fitted on the screen while retaining the correct aspect ratio. The image can be resized using standard mouse or keyboard techniques and the image will automatically resize to fit. You may display more than one image at a time, but be aware that images can use a lot of memory and the performance of your computer may suffer if you have a large number displayed at the same time.

In the window displaying a single image there is another popup menu obtained by a right-click. This allows a number of operations to be carried out on the displayed image. These and other operations can also be carried out using the mouse directly and/or the keyboard
