Entity Menu

Categorize This menu option allows you to add the highlighted item(s), group(s) or category/ies to another group or category, as appropriate, without removing it from the group or category it is currently in. A dialogue box will appear asking you to select the JEAN node to which you wish to attach the entity. Highlight the new node and press ok, and the entity will now appear in the old and new place.

This is also a way of moving entities that have been classified incorrectly. Once you have used Categorise to put the entity into the correct place, the entity can then be removed from its old place.

There is only ever one actual copy of the entity. All the other appearances are links to it. This means that if you make a change to the values in the entity, all appearances of the entity will display the new values.

Delete This menu option allows you to delete the highlighted node or nodes. If the node is a group or category, all child nodes will be deleted automatically. Deleted nodes can be retrieved again.

Rename This menu option allows you to rename the highlighted node.A dialogue box will appear asking you to enter the new name.

Select all children Choosing this menu item allows you to select all the child nodes of the selected node, and all their child nodes and so on. The submenu gives you the option of All, Category, Group or Item nodes.

Select children This menu item allows you to select the child nodes of the selected node, but not their child nodes. The submenu gives you the option of All, Category, Group or Item nodes.

Make list This menu item allows you to create a list from a number of selected items. This list will appear in a new window and is a way of looking through items quickly using the JEAN listviewer.

Add Note This allows you to add a note to any item in any catalog, for example to add comments to an entry in the AddressBook catalog. Once your note has been added, a new Notes tab will appear on the right hand frame of the main window whenever this item is selected. In the Notes catalog, a new category called AddressBook will appear, with a subtree terminating in an item which contains your new note. This item will have the same name as the original AddressBook item to which the note was added.

Add Xref This allows you to cross reference an attribute from another catalog. One catalog item can have several cross references. For example, say you were a content provider, creating an encyclopaedia about birds. Using the xref facility you could tie together text about a particular type of bird, a picture of the bird, a video and a recording of the birdsong.

The JEAN attribute input dialogue box will appear and you will be asked to type in a name for the cross reference. This will allow you to identify it, as you are allowed more than one cross reference. Then press the Pick button and a new dialogue box will appear asking you to select an application. This is the name of the catalog containing the item you wish to cross reference. The tree structure for the chosen catalog will then be shown and you can select the appropriate node. You will then be asked to choose which attribute of the item you wish to cross reference. It is the value of this attribute which will be displayed. For example you may wish to choose an attribute that holds the text you wish to display. You can effectively cross reference the whole item by choosing JEANname as the attribute.

Once you have chosen the attribute and pressed OK, an xref page will be generated containing the names of the xrefs and their values. This new page will not be displayed until JEAN has been shut down and restarted. The values displayed will either be plain text as appropriate, or a button to play or display the value in the case of a multimedia attribute such as music or an image. Whenever you select an item containing xrefs, then the cross referenced items will also be selected when you tab to the catalog containing them.

Exit This menu item is used to exit from JEAN.
